The AquaGem Water Treatment System     (AWT System)

Our initial and most important reasons for the development of the AWT System as an alternative to chlorination were health and environmental issues. It is well known today (and supported by meta studies) that chlorination by products can cause severe health problems inclucing and especially cancer.

Another major health concern not only in Australia, but also world wide is the increasing resistance of certain organisms (legionella, giardia, crypto sporidia, pseudomonas etc.) to chlorination and the `out breaks' of legionella, for example, connected with the inability to control these organisms. Hundreds of tests conducted over a number of years have shown that the AWT System effectively controls legionella, pseudomonas and other disease causing organisms.

Unlike chlorination, water treated with the AWT System can be discharged directly into the waste water stream. There is no need for neutralization of chlorine. Back wash water (from swimming pools and filters, for example) can be used to water lawns and gardens.

Water treated with the AWT System is non toxic. Let your goldfish swim with you !

Advantages of the AWT System in cooling towers, Industrial and Commercial Applications:

* minimal corrosion
* scale reduction
* reduction of slime
* improved thermal efficiency
* reduction in energy costs
* effective control of legionella
* more stable pH
* generally very clean tower

Advantages of the AWT System in swimming pools:

* virtually automatic system
* no smell or taste
* no detrimental health affects
* no red eyes or skin irritation
* cost efficient
* no damage to pools and equipment (corrosion from chlorine or salt)
* you can drink the water
* no fading swim wear
* no dry skin
* waste water, may be re-used - use your backwash water to water the  lawn and garden

Advantages of the AWT System in drinking water:

* no more bad chlorine smell and taste as in current tap water applications
* improved water quality
* longer dwell time in water pipes etc.
* chlorination is an established health risk - oxygenation is not

The system can be used for the sanitation of swimming pools, cooling towers, drinking water and in many other applications where water needs to be treated in order to control disease causing organisms.    The AWT System was developed as an alternative to chlorination which is still the most widely use method for water sanitation.

As an alternative to chlorination the AWT System is non toxic, environmentally friendly, shows minimal corrosion, is not a health risk and controls organisms which become increasingly resistant to chlorination.

Tests conducted over a number of years on industrial cooling towers have shown that the AWT System effectively controls legionella and other disease causing organisms, reduces scaling and slime formation and  keeps cooling towers generally clean which increases thermal efficiency.

The AWT System uses mixed oxidants with hydrogen peroxide as a main constituent. Similar mixed oxidant systems (see MIOX Systems) have been tested by the US Army, US EPA, US Public Health Service, US Department of Agriculture and numerous Universities.

The graph on the right is showing a comparison between the effectiveness of chlorine and mixed oxidants.

We have made improvements to the mixed oxidant system through the use of catalytic metals (producing hydroxyl radicals, for example) and conducted our own tests here in Australia.       The  tests were conducted by an independent and NATA registered  laboratory (Hunter Water Board Test Laboratories, Newcastle, Australia) and speak for themselves.

Apart from the test shown, hundreds of tests have been conducted by independent laboratories for legionella, TBC  (Total Bacteria Count), corrosiveness and so on.

Clive Broadbent , Australia's leading water treatment specialist, has written  positive technical reports on the AquaGem Water Treatment System in use in cooling towers.
